Location. The Francis Malbone House is located on the harborfront in Newport, R.I., known for its numerous historic sites and spectacular mansions.
Hotel Features. A shipping merchant, Colonel Francis Malbone, built the historic portion of this home in 1760, which includes nine of the 18 guestrooms. The newer addition was completed in 1996. The breakfasts, heralded by Bon Appetit, include entrees such as pecan waffles with maple whipped cream and eggs Benedict with a roasted red pepper hollandaise. A full gourmet breakfast is included with room rate. Breakfast is served from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Guestrooms. Fine furnishings fill the rooms, most of which offer a fireplace. Twelve rooms include a jetted tub. Each room is carefully decorated with antiques and period furnishings. The original wide plank board flooring adds additional warmth and charm to these beautiful rooms. The in house guestrooms offer a queen bed, television with VCR/DVD player, and two garden side rooms have fireplaces. The Counting House Suite is the "grand dame" of the inn. Built in 1860, it is a separate building attached to the main house through the library. This private suite offers a king bed, large sitting area with queen pullout sleeper sofa and a large double jetted tub with a separate marble shower. A gas fireplace completes this room with 18 foot ceilings. Two of the Harborside Rooms feature a queen bed and a twin bed. Each room offers a seasonal fireplace and a view of Newport Harbor across the street. Bathrooms have been recently updated with granite counters and large showers. The Courtyard Suite has a king bed, fireplace and sitting area with two wing back chairs. The room features French doors leading to a semi private garden. The bathroom features a single jetted tub and shower. The Courtyard Rooms with garden are located on the first floor. These are large rooms with fireplaces and jetted tubs. The second floor Newport Rooms offer the same amenities as those with a garden.
